Beech is a very hard and strong wood, so there is no flex whatsoever in the handle. For $16, the No. 7 is a no-brainer for knife fans, folks that like to do a bit of food prep with their pocket.

Feb 8, 2017. #10. Easy fix. Mash a teaspoon or so of wax (hard floor wax works great, but candle wax would do) into the blade groove and melt it in with a hot air dryer* (*don't use your significant other's unless you get permission). Seals the wood and lubes the locking ring too.

54 posts · Joined 2012. #9 · Aug 3, 2012. My old Opinel is the #8 with a 3 1/2 inch carbon blade. Pear-wood handle. It is a nice light field knife. It is a classic. Mine has done a bunch of whittling, and has cut a lot of cheese and sausage.

For pipe purposes, I think the 6 1/2 inch, blade tip to end of handle, 3 inch blade, is probably most of what you need, for storage, pipe bag, and having a blade the size that could be used to trimming a little cake (though I'm not a cake builder). They are moderately priced, so you could get two.

It's a phenomenal value… only $17 or so at present for the standard model. It's the ideal size… because it's available in any size you want. Whatever size is ideal for you.

It works better than most modern folding knives at kitchen duties, but certainly everyone should have a paring knife at home that functions better than an Opinel folding knife. It also does a better job at knife duties in general than most modern knives. I'd say it's like a French version of a sod buster.

A well treated Opinel will not lock up in any extended rainy weather. If treated right, an Opinel will stand up to extended submerging with only a bit of stiffening of the action. I've used mineral oil soaks, wax melted into the wood around the pivot, and linseed oil. All seemed to do away with the problem.

If you do a search for some Opinel conversations on dedicated knife forums, you'll find lots of tips and ideas about modifying them, sealing the wood to keep out moisture, the best edge angles, etc..

I was cutting through thick blackberry bushes recently with my Opinel No. 15 Slim, to clear a footprint for a ladder, so I could pick fruit from a tree.

57. Sep 19, 2021. #1. One of my current EDC knives is an Opinel No 8. It's a great pocket knife and has served me well whenever I've needed it. Deployment is obviously a little slow as it's not possible to open it one handed. That aside it's a good sturdy knife. anyone have any thoughts on Opinel?
